“Plants that Twitter when they need to be watered”

February 26, 2008 · 2 Comments

Botanicalls at New York Univeristy’s Interactive Telecommunications Program have found a way to have your plants tell you when it needs water. The group originally discovered a way to have your houseplant call you when it was feeling dry but now, as the article points out, like your mother and best friends, your houseplant can twitter you it’s needs. It works through your online twitter account and can reach you anywhere in the world. This seems very weird to me and although I don’t have a twitter account, I already get daily harassment calls from friends and family… the plant would be overkill. Even though I’m skeptical, this development is cool, if not just for sheer novelty.

Thats pretty ridiculous. Who would have thought that we would be able to warned through a wireless connection that our plants need water. It soon will develop into more useful things. I think twitter is an amazing idea and will be very useful in the future.

I’m still trying to figure out Twitter. It seems like it has the potential to be very useful, but I couldn’t see it being useful for me right now. Having your plant tell you when it needs water seems to be a little bit of overkill though. How would you water it if you were halfway around the world when it “contacted” you anyway?
